Summary Dissection
The Locke family faces their worst nightmare when the person responsible for shattering their lives resurfaces and demands one of the keys.
While Echo keeps Tyler distracted, Sam invades Key House, holding Kinsey, Bode and Nina at gunpoint in order to get the Head Key from them. Flashbacks reveal Sam's abused upbringing and how Echo's interference led to his mistrust of guidance counselor Rendell and new friend Tyler.
Synopsis Dissection
The Past.A biology teacher presents a film on dissecting a pig. The teacher leaves to get some pins, whereby Sam starts playing with his dissection pig, "oinking" to the tune of Jingle Bells. The other students laugh, and Sam gets up and makes the pig "dance." He walks to the front and slams the pig down, shocking the students. The teacher returns, stopping Sam's performance.
Guidance counselor Rendell Locke calls Sam into his office and tells him the principal wants to give Sam three weeks of detention - and it hasn't even been a week since Sam's last incident. Sam says people were laughing and he just got carried away, but it lately seems that Sam has been getting carried away a lot. Rendell asks what's going on with Sam, and Sam says he doesn't know. The teenager admits that things aren't the best at home but okay. Rendell tells him that he's been in Sam's shoes, has screwed up a lot, and wants to help him. As Rendell speaks of vocational school, Sam "hears" the painting of Key House on the wall calling to him in Dodge's voice. Dodge says she sees him, and Sam nods in blind agreement when Rendell asks how his vocational school plan sounds.
Sam asks Rendell about the house in the painting, and Rendell says it's his family's home in Massachusetts. The counselor says that it reminds him of where he came from and makes him appreciate where he is. Sam looks at it thoughtfully.

Now.
An armed Sam walks toward Key House.
Sam breaks in and walks through its hallways, wincing briefly at the bloody wound on his hand where he broke a window. He grabs a dishrag to stop the bleeding and continues searching.
In the basement with Bode, Kinsey finds her old stuffed dolphin doll, Sally, and remembers. Bode worries about what Dodge said and thinks they should call Tyler, but Kinsey lost her phone in the sea caves.
Stopping to eat a banana, Sam finds Nina's phone on the kitchen table and pockets it, then walks upstairs.
In her bedroom, Nina looks through Rendell's high school photos from Joe's box. Sam peers in through the doorway then continues on his way. He confirms that Kinsey's bedroom is empty, then goes into Tyler's bedroom, closing the door behind him, which Nina hears creak shut.
Sam finds Tyler's clothing in the closet, changes into them, and examines a healed scar on his forehead. Nina comes down the hall, calling to her children. No one responds.
Kinsey and Bode come upstairs with the last of Kinsey's things from the boxes. Bode wants to use Nina's phone to call Tyler and see if he's safe. Kinsey sees the broken window and blood. Since Dodge can enter through any doorway, it can't be her. They see the blood trail lead upstairs and wonder who it is.
Nina enters Tyler's room and finds Sam waiting for her, aiming his stolen gun at her. He asks her not to scream, and Kinsey, hearing him, tells Bode to hide while she helps Nina. Instead, Bode takes out the Ghost Key and asks Kinsey to guard his body and keep the door open. He unlocks the door and passes through it, and his spirit leaves his body.
Bode's spirit flies aloft and passes through a wall into Tyler's room, finding Sam and Nina. Neither of them can see Bode's spirit form. Sam asks after the Head Key, but Nina doesn't know anything about it. Sam doesn't believe her but figures the kids will know and asks where they are, at which point Bode returns to his body and reports to Kinsey that Sam has a gun, and Nina, and wants the Head Key (about which neither Bode nor Kinsey can figure how he knows).
Kinsey hides the Head Key inside Sally, sets it down, then runs off with Bode. They come to an abrupt stop meeting Sam and Nina downstairs, where Sam calmly demands the Head Key. When Kinsey claims she doesn't know what it is, Sam puts his gun to Nina's head and asks if she knows how much he doesn't like being disrespected. He knows Kinsey knows what he's talking about. Bode presents the Ghost Key, figuring Sam won't recognize it and can't take...
Sam easily snatches the Key before Bode can say "it," but says it's not how "she" said it's supposed to look. Bode realizes that he's talking about Echo, and says that Sam should try the Key. Sam refuses, pockets the Ghost Key, and searches Bode for other Keys but finds nothing. He asks Kinsey what she has. She takes out the Music Box Key, but Sam realizes it's not the Head Key. After he pats Kinsey down and doesn't find it, he demands to know where it is. Kinsey says Tyler has it, so Sam says that they'll wait for Tyler and eat while they wait.
In Dodge's truck, Tyler and Dodge drink (a game where he drinks then she), and then they kiss and start undressing.
Sam has tied Nina, Kinsey and Bode to kitchen chairs and serves them all turkey tetrazzini from the microwave - with spoons, no sharp forks. He invites "catch up" conversation, whereby he mentions he escaped from prison (obvious to all). Kinsey asks him about his brain swelling after Nina fractured Sam's skull with a hammer - a shame she didn't finish. Sam tells her to shut up and eat.

The Past.
At home, Sam makes burned toast for his sister Lindsey. Their father Randy comes in and says that they didn't ask permission to make breakfast. And why'd he serve Lindsey his cola when there's plenty of water in the tap? Sam tells Randy to leave Lindsey alone, and Randy orders Sam to hit him, calling him a "wimp" when he doesn't. When he mock-throws a punch at Sam, Sam flinches but doesn't block it, and Randy sternly reminds him what he taught him about blocking punches - expect a right punch, raise your left to block, and throw a right of your own. Randy mock-throws another punch and Sam blocks it but doesn't throw a right.
Someone knocks at the door, and Sam, saying it's his friend ("Who??!" chuckles Randy), goes to the door. Randy goes with him, and invites Tyler in, who's come early after hockey practice. Sam says that they should go and starts to walk away, and Randy (all friendly now) tells Tyler that he'll see him around.

Now.
Sam drinks cola from the bottle, and Nina recalls the omega symbol tattooed on his arm. She asks him about it, and he immediately talks about Rendell. He asks what they think Rendell would say if he was there, and Kinsey says that she would have told him to have Sam committed before he destroyed their family. Sam says that he'd tell Rendell it was all his fault and always has been. Nina asks why it's Rendell's fault, and asks who sent him to their house in Seattle. Sam insists that Dodge cares about him and needs the Keys, and Bode realizes he's talking about the well lady, Echo, who has been stalking them. He asks why Dodge wants the Head Key, and Sam explains that it will let her get into people's heads, as someone knows how to open the Black Door. Nina wonders if Dodge told Sam to kill Rendell, and Sam sarcastically asks them to remind him why he has to answer any of their questions.
After sex, Dodge asks Tyler what they do now because the night is still young. Tyler figures he should go, and Dodge sees him pick up the Anywhere Key from among her clothing. She suggests that they drive to the lighthouse for a second round and asks for the Key back, then makes it a demand. Tyler, with awareness dawning, invites her to take it from him, and when Dodge screams in frustration, he gets out of the truck quickly and runs off. Dodge chases him and Tyler uses the Anywhere Key to escape through the Quick-Stop door back to his bedroom.
Heading downstairs, Tyler hears Sam talking to the others. He tackles Sam, knocking the gun out of his hand, and beats him. Sam manages to pull out the Fire Key and set the kitchen floor on fire. When Tyler loses his grip, Sam grabs his gun and aims it at Nina. Sam demands the Head Key and doesn't believe Tyler when he says he doesn't have it.
Bode tells Kinsey to say where she hid the Head Key, and Kinsey yells that Tyler doesn't have it. She claims she buried it in the woods because it was dangerous, and Sam should believe her because she doesn't want him to hurt her family. Sam says that he, Kinsey and Bode are going to go dig it up.
After Sam ties Tyler to a chair, Tyler and Nina beg to be taken instead of Bode and Kinsey, but Sam doesn't need Tyler or Nina and insists Bode go with him as "collateral." Nina threatens Sam if he hurts her children, and an impressed Sam says that's why he's taking them and not her. Before going, Kinsey tells Tyler that, if anything happens to her, he should take care of Sally.
As they go out into the forest, Kinsey asks Sam what's going to happen when Dodge opens the Black Door. He tells her to shut up, and Kinsey surmises that he doesn't know. Bode warns that Dodge lies to people, and Sam calls him the son of a liar.
-----
The Past.
Rendell asks Sam how the last few weeks have gone, and Sam says that they've been good and that he's been hanging out with Tyler. Before Sam can describe his home life, Rendell gets a phone call and leaves. Sam looks at a photo of Rendell with his family and hears (and sees) Dodge talking to him from the well house of the etching. She says that she's his friend, or wants to be, and tells Sam to look on the desk. He sees Rendell's file on him and Dodge tells him to open it. Inside is a report with Rendell wondering if Sam has a borderline personality disorder, with some observations provided by Tyler.
Dodge insists that Rendell and Tyler aren't Sam's real friends, and he's nothing more than a virus to them. She tells Sam that she would never lie to him because she knows how special he is. Sam yells that it isn't real, but Dodge says that she is real and knows how to get Sam what he wants. Once he listens to Dodge, Sam runs out. Rendell returns, sees Sam running and calls to him, but Sam keeps going.
-----
Now.
Kinsey leads Sam to the spot where she buried her fear. Sam tells Bode to sit and Kinsey to dig (using the shovel she once left there).
In Key House, Tyler knocks his chair over, breaking it and freeing himself. He cuts Nina free and goes to the study to get Sally while Nina, using Tyler's phone, calls 911.
Kinsey keeps digging, and Sam says that if there's no Head Key there he'll kill them both. She finds the discarded knife she used to kill her fear and picks it up, but Sam disarms her. Sam tells her that he now has to kill her, but Kinsey's fear digs itself out of its grave and attacks Sam. Kinsey grabs Bode and runs, while Sam tries to get his gun while defending himself.
Tyler finds Sally and removes the Head Key from it. Nina comes in to say the police will be there in five to ten minutes and wonders what the Key is that Tyler holds.
Sam grabs his gun and shoots Kinsey's Fear in its head. He shoots again, and Kinsey's Fear Monster runs off with a squeal.
Tyler and Nina hear the two gunshots and fear the worst.
Sam runs to Key House, passing Kinsey's and Bode's hiding place. He enters the kitchen and sees that Tyler and Nina have escaped. As Sam seeks Tyler, Nina stabs him in the shoulder. They fight and Sam gets the better of her and aims his gun at her, yelling that she made him do it and that he can't let Dodge down.
Tyler comes up behind Sam and inserts the Head Key into his neck. Sam's body goes rigid, and Tyler grabs the projected Sam that appears while Nina grabs Sam's gun. Projected Sam, being more forthright, says that Bode and Kinsey ran off while some creature attacked him, and he recognizes his front door that now stands next to him. Nina is shocked. Tyler tells her she's seen magic before but just can't remember it. Sam says that he screwed everything up and hugs Tyler, sobbing. He tells Tyler that he didn't want to kill Rendell but just find the keys for Dodge.
-----
Flashback: Back in Seattle, Tyler tells Sam, that after killing his own father, to kill Tyler's father while he's at it.
-----
Sam doesn't remember when Tyler joked to him about killing Rendell, and Tyler is relieved to know he isn't to blame. Tyler tells Sam that what he said doesn't matter, and Sam says that he thought Tyler was his friend but that Tyler and Rendell both lied to him. Shocked, Tyler admits that Rendell did tell him to be friends with Sam, but he really liked him and they were friends until he showed up at their house with a gun. Sam says Dodge said she cares about him, that Tyler doesn't understand, but Tyler says he understands why Sam followed Dodge's instructions.
Dodge drives up to Key House and enters.
Tyler explains that Sam's head is on the other side of the door, and stops Nina when she goes to the door to open it. With Tyler distracted, Sam takes the Head Key out of his body and, returning to his regular body, grabs the Head Key. Dodge enters and slams Tyler to the floor, punches Nina unconscious, and kicks the gun away. She thanks Sam for finding the Head Key. Tyler tells Sam that Dodge can only take the key if given to her willingly. Angry, Dodge says that it all could have been avoided if Rendell told Sam what she needed to know.
Sam asks Dodge if she really thinks he's special, and she says she does. He makes her promise that she's not lying, and Dodge asks if he thinks she's lying to him. She doesn't make the promise, and when Sam asks her again, Dodge stabs him with a letter opener and takes the Head Key, saying that while she can't take Keys from the Lockes, anyone else is fair game.
Nina recovers and leads Tyler out, and Dodge, collecting all the Keys, tells Sam that the reason no one loved him is because he isn't special at all. She leaves with the Keys, using the Anywhere Key, as Sam collapses to his knees.
Nina and Tyler emerge from the house as police arrive and tell the officers that Sam is within. With police closing in, Sam goes through the nearest door, and his spirit leaves his body because the Ghost Key is still in its lock. The officers arrive and close the door, unable to hear Ghost Sam when he begs them to stop. They then confirm that Sam's body has no vitals.
The officers, having found Kinsey and Bode, bring them to Key House. As the Lockes hug, Sam's spirit drifts above them, watching but unseen. After a moment, he disappears.
Later after the officers leave, Kinsey confirms for Nina that Bode and Tyler are upstairs but none of them are going to sleep. Nina hugs her daughter then Kinsey goes to her bedroom. Nina takes out the hidden bottle of Ellie's housewarming wine, pours herself a cup and, after a moment, consumes it in one gulp. She sighs with relief.
